Together with my team I have significantly contributed to the elucidation of nitric oxide-dependent signaling pathways in the cardiovascular system. The team that I lead was one of the first to characterize nitric oxide deficient hypertension and was the first to describe myocardial microinfarctions caused by a deficiency of this relaxation factor. I am currently focusing the targeted therapy of hypertension and heart failure with active substances and drugs bound to polymeric nanoparticles, which also have potential in the treatment of COVID-19. Last year, as the principal investigator, I submitted a Structural Funds project focused just on the development of drugs loaded-nanoparticles to treat the consequences caused by COVID-19. I have published 2 monographs, 145 impacted CC articles, I have about 3700 SCI citations, Hirsh index 39, and I provided more than 60 invited lectures.

Special Issue "Vasodilators: New Insights" Special Issue is mainly devoted to original knowledge in the field of c-AMP-, c-GMP- and hyperpolarization-mediated vasodilation, and PDE5 inhibitors and potassium channel openers, to central vasomotor control mechanisms, cold-induced vasodilation and other mechanisms of vasodilation. The Special Issue further focuses on modifiers of vasodilatory mechanisms, such as polyphenolic substances and many antioxidants; the targeted delivery of vasodilators, e.g., through nanoparticles; potential new vasodilators; and new perspectives on treatment options. Deadline for manuscript submissions: 31 December 2021.
Molecules
"Biological Activity of Natural Substances and Their Derivatives" In this Special Issue, researchers and clinicians were invited to contribute original research and review articles that analyze and describe new mechanisms of actions of different natural substances, and their derivatives and secondary metabolite products. Special interest was devoted to new natural products with pleiotropic effects for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, nervous system disorders, inflammatory diseases, and others.
Oxidative Medicine and Longevity (1)
Oxidative Stress and Cardiovascular Dysfunction: From Basic Science to Applied Investigations The aim of this special issuewas to collect the latest results from various parts of the world concerning the role of oxidative stress in development of various cardiovascular disorders and the role of reactive species in the physiological regulation of homeostatic processes within the cardiovascular system.
Oxidative Medicine and Longevity (2)
Oxidative Stress and Autoimmunity: Causes and Consequences The aim of this Special Issue is to encourage authors to submit original scientific papers and review articles which contain novel information concerning the roles of oxidative stress in the physiological regulation of immune responses, molecular mechanisms connecting autoimmune diseases and oxidative stress, the effects of immunomodulatory therapy on oxidative stress in autoimmune diseases, as well as the use of antioxidants in therapy for autoimmune conditions. Submission deadline: 23 July 2021
Physiological Research (2)
2016 This special issue of Physiological Research was devoted to the prominent Slovak physiologist, Mária Gerová, on her jubilee. The professional life of Dr. Gerová is 60 years connected with the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, where since 1956 she was involved in the development of physiological laboratories focused to the research of cardiovascular system. She has always been one of the leading personalities determining the thematic orientation of the Institute. The issue involves valuable articles dedicated to Mária Gerová from the colleagues.

2010 Novel approaches for protection against pathological heart remodelling were presented in this issue. E.g., melatonin, because of its extraordinary antioxidant and sympatholytic actions may prove to be a useful protective drug against heart remodelling. In hypertension induced by relative aldosteronism, the correction of macro and micronutrient dyshomeostasis appears to act beneficially within pathological myocardial remodelling. Compound 21, a peptide angiotensin II type 2 (AT2) receptor agonist, offers a novel approach in investigating the role of AT2 receptors in the protection of the hypertensive heart. A novel NO donor, L-419, with its intrinsic protection of NO, improves the entire NO signalling cascade and thus favourably influencing the response of the left ventricle to haemodynamic overload.

2009 Several newer areas of hypertension research were presented in this issue. First, the benefits of melatonin in the treatment of experimental hypertension including its cardioprotective effects, second, the possible role of melatonin in the non-dipping blood pressure pattern, third, two hypotheses discussed the potential reasons for the ineffectivness of antioxidants in hypertension treatment, fourth, the protective effect of angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockade against alterations in insulin-resistant rats, and the deleterious effect of a low protein diet on kidney maturation with the development of hypertension.
Physiological Research (1)
2006 It was a great pleasure to introduce this special issue of Physiological Research as the representative publication of the international co-operations of the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology, Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. For more than 50 years, the Institute developed the basic and applied research in the field of experimental medicine. The Institute is engaged in the research of the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms playing a substantial role in the so-called diseases from civilization. This activity was reflected in participation of the Institute in the EU program devoted to the work place health promotion.
